Lighthearted when it focuses on the self-serving elite, somber when it probes the resultant suffering of a continent, this novel is about Africa today. Its theme: how knowledge of Africa's real past could energize the future remaking of a long abused society.

The book arrived in excellent condition and I was so surprised to receive it so quickly. I cannot wait to read "The Resolutionaries" later this summer.

This is truly a wonderful book. Armah, of course, is a an elegant and majestic storyteller. But what distinguishes this text from his other gems is the explicit and detailed examination of Africa's linguistic challenges. Here, he suggests that a common African language is a necessary step in creating new, healthier African societies. This thesis may, at first glance, appear outlandish too some. But to reject it may be a symptom of epistemic coloniality and not the 'unworkability' of the proposal, Armah subtly suggests. This book is, in short, an excellent read. It is a journey through Africa's political history with one of the best minds and spirits our continent has produced.
